As a model of academic policy dialogue between Japan and ASEAN, Kyoto-ASEAN Forum 2015 aims at systematically supporting Kyoto University’s academic and educational activities through materialization of policy dialogs.

At the 7th International Strategy Committee, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in Japan, ASEAN region is designed as priority area for Science and Technology diplomacy. 

 

Experts participated in the kickoff meeting for Kyoto - ASEAN Forum 2015 

 

The kickoff meeting for Kyoto - ASEAN Forum 2015 is organized by ASEAN center of Kyoto University on March 1st,2015 in Thailand. The objective of the Kickoff Meeting is to exchange ideas and opinions about how Kyoto University can collaborate with ASEAN in order to materialize the academic policy dialogue. Participants are mainly from universities and governments in ASEAN. From Kyoto University, about 40 professors and associate professors from centers and research institutes attend the meeting. Other 20 guests come from ASEAN University Network, ASEAN Foundation, embassies, universities, ministry of education, ministry of environment,etc… from Asean countries. Associate professor Dr. Vu Anh Dung represented Vietnam-Japan University. 

The role of researching, human capacity building, and University Social Responsibility (UCR)  are main discussion topics. From the current problems of collaborative research(such as sustainability of collaborative research, networks of scientists, and the development of human resources in research programs), proposed collaborative researchesbetween ASEAN and Japan towardsinterdisciplinary research fields such as climate change, environmental management, biodiversity, and water resource management,etc. In the area of training, the cooperative problems often araise due to the differences in recognition of credits/courses, languages, supportive services, timetables, risk management in the process of implementing training programs, and environmental changes for students when living aboard… Therefore, the discussion focuses on solving above problems. About University Social Responsibility (USR), experts mention many problems including issues from connection between universities; policy makers and business; and repositioning the role of higher education in the context of globalization. 

In the discussion, Associate professor Dr. Vu Anh Dung emphasizes the importance of higher education for training to future leaders and young talents (particularly from disadvantaged areas where they have no opportunity to pursue advanced academic environment). The potential cooperation in developing training programs, academic exchange between Vietnam-Japan University, Kyoto University, and other Asean Universities in common fields such as: climate change, Nano technology, Environmental technology, public policy, area studies, business management…Some research fields aims to solve poverty problems; against the impact of climate change on human being and livelihoods; gain gender equality, non-traditional security,etc which are common interests in the ASEAN area and Great Mekong Subregion (GMS).

Kyoto - ASEAN Forum is an important bridge to connect Japan and ASEAN for Vietnam Japan University to implement cooperation in education, research and contribute to soceity in the future, particularly in the context of increasing influences of ASEAN to the international community and the closed relation between ASEAN and Japan. 

 

In 2016: Vietnam Japan University is going to startits enrollment and launch six master programs includes: Nano technology, Environmental technology, public policy, area studies, infrastructure engineering, and business management. The training programs will be incorporated with Japanese leading universities such as The University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Osaka University, etc.
